AN IDEA FOR BRINGING IN THE NEW YEAR
CRACKER JACK GIFT FOR CHRISTMAS ~ 1956
Cracker Jack is a brand of snack food consisting of molasses-flavored,
caramel-coated popcorn and peanuts, well known for being packaged
with a prize of trivial value inside. The Cracker Jack name and slogan,
"The More You Eat The More You Want", were registered in 1896. Some
food historians consider it the first junk food.

CLINTON IMPEACHED ON THIS DAY IN 1998
President Bill Clinton is sworn in for his taped grand jury testimony
on Aug. 17, 1998, at the White House.
After nearly 14 hours of debate, the House of Representatives approves two
articles of impeachment against President Bill Clinton, charging him with
lying under oath to a federal grand jury and obstructing justice. Clinton, the
second president in American history to be impeached, vowed to finish his
term.
On February 12, the Senate voted on whether to remove Clinton from office
and the president was acquitted on both articles of impeachment. The
prosecution needed a two-thirds majority to convict but failed to achieve
even a bare majority. Rejecting the first charge of perjury, 45 Democrats
and 10 Republicans voted “not guilty,” and on the charge of obstruction
of justice the Senate was split 50-50. After the trial concluded, President
Clinton said he was “profoundly sorry” for the burden his behavior
imposed on Congress and the American people.
HISTORY WAS MADE ON THIS DAY
On this day in 1936, the first issue of the pictorial magazine Life
was published, featuring a cover photo of the Fort Peck Dam’s
spillway by Margaret Bourke-White.
Life actually had its start earlier in the 20th century as a different
kind of magazine: a weekly humor publication, not unlike today’s
The New Yorker in its use of tart cartoons, humorous pieces and
cultural reporting. When the original Life folded during the Great
Depression, the influential American publisher Henry Luce
bought the name and re-launched the magazine as a picture-
based periodical on this day in 1936. By this time, Luce had
already enjoyed great success as the publisher of Time, a
weekly news magazine.
