FORMER D.C. MAYOR DIES AT 78
Marion Shepilov Barry, Jr. (March 6, 1936 – November 23, 2014)
Marion Barry, the longtime mayor of the District of Columbia died shortly after
midnight Sunday at the United Medical Center, after having been released from
Howard University Hospital the previous day.
No cause of death was immediately specified, but spokeswoman LaToya Foster
said Barry collapsed outside his home. Barry had battled kidney problems as a
result of diabetes and high blood pressure and underwent a kidney transplant
in February 2009.
Barry made a political comeback after a 1990 FBI sting videotaped him smoking
crack cocaine,

BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1914
Jonas Edward Salk (October 28, 1914 – June 23, 1995)
Jonas Salk was a medical researcher and virologist who, in 1955,
developed a vaccine against polio, considered to be the most
frightening public health problem of the post-war U.S. In 1960
he founded he Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla,
California and he spent his last years attempting to find a cure
for HIV.
MARCIA STRASSMAN DIES AT 66
Marcia A. Strassman (April 28, 1948 – October 25, 2014)
(AP) – Marcia Strassman, who played Gabe Kaplan’s wife, Julie,
on the 1970s sitcom "Welcome Back, Kotter," has died.
Strassman’s sister, Julie, confirmed her death to the Associated
Press.
Strassman died at her Sherman Oaks, California, home on Friday
after battling breast cancer for seven years.
Strassman had numerous roles on television and in film during her
five-decade career.
She played nurse Margie Cutler on the first season of "M.A.S.H."
before her breakout role in "Welcome Back, Kotter."
Marcia Strassman and Gabe Kaplan starred in "Welcome Back, Kotter”
on ABC television from September 1975 to June 1979.
BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1942
Annette Joanne Funicello (October 22, 1942 – April 8, 2013)
Annette was discovered by Walt Disney at the age 12 during her
performance as the Swan Queen in Swan Lake. She became one
of the most popular "Mouseketeers" on the original Mickey Mouse
Club on ABC television. She died of complications from multiple
sclerosis at the age of 70.
