LIFESAVING MANEUVER IS IN NEW BOOK

heimlich-now
Henry Judah Heimlich turned 94 February 3

CINCINNATI (AP) — The Cincinnati surgeon who wrote the book on saving
choking victims through his namesake Heimlich maneuver has now penned
a new book: his memoir.

Dr. Henry Heimlich’s views on how the maneuver should be used and on
other innovations he has created or proposed have put him at odds with
some in the health field. But he hopes his recently published memoir will
preserve the technique that has cleared obstructions from windpipes of
choking victims around the world for four decades and made his name
a household word.

"I know the maneuver saves lives, and I want it to be used and remembered,"
the 94-year-old retired chest surgeon told The Associated Press this month.
"I felt I had to have it down in print so the public will have all the correct
information."

CLINT EASTWOOD IS A HERO, FOR REAL!

Pebble Beach Golf

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) – Clint Eastwood added another starring role at the
AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am – life saver.

Eastwood attended a volunteer party on the eve of the PGA Tour event when he
noticed tournament director Steve John choking on a piece of cheese. The 83-
year-old actor quickly performed the Heimlich maneuver Wednesday night at the Monterey Conference Center.

"I was drinking water and eating these little appetizers, threw down a piece of
cheese and it just didn’t work," John said Friday. "I was looking at him and
couldn’t breathe. He recognized it immediately and saved my life."

Eastwood is a prominent figure at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am,
formerly as an amateur contestant and now as chairman of the Monterey
Peninsula Foundation. It has raised over $100 million for charity as the host of
the PGA Tour event.

He’s often in the CBS tower on the weekend and presents the trophy to the
winner, a list that includes Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Brandt Snedeker
in recent years
.
The Hollywood star wasn’t expecting an additional duty this week. Eastwood
said it was the first time he used the life saving maneuver.

THE INVENTION OF A POPULAR LIP BALM

Chapstick-Classic

In the early 1880s, Dr. Charles Browne Fleet a physician and pharmacist from
Lynchburg, Virginia, invented ChapStick as a lip balm. The handmade product,
which resembled a wickless candle wrapped in tin foil, was sold locally, and did
not have much success.

In 1912, John Morton, also a Lynchburg resident, bought the rights to the
product for five dollars. Mrs. Morton melted the pink ChapStick mixture in
their home kitchen, cooled it, and cut it into sticks. Their lucrative sales were
used to found the Morton Manufacturing Corporation.

In the early 1930s, Frank Wright, Jr., a local commercial artist was paid a
flat fee of $15 to design the ChapStick logo that is still in use today.
