On February 28, 1983, the celebrated sitcom M*A*S*H bowed
out after 11 seasons, airing a special two-and-a-half hour
episode watched by 77 percent of the television viewing
audience. It was the largest percentage ever to watch a
single TV show up to that time.
On February 24, 1836, in San Antonio, Texas, Colonel William
Travis issued a call for help on behalf of the Texan troops
defending the Alamo, an old Spanish mission and fortress
under siege by the Mexican army.
The Battle of the Alamo was a key battle in the Texas Revolution
that took place from February 23 to March 6, 1836. The Mexican
army won the battle, which ended in the deaths of all the
defenders.

February 23, 1945: During the bloody Battle for Iwo Jima, U.S.
Marines from the 3rd Platoon, E Company, 2nd Battalion, 28th
Regiment of the 5th Division took the crest of Mount Suribachi,
the island’s highest peak and most strategic position, and raised
the U.S. flag.
Marine photographer Louis Lowery, who was with them, recorded
the event. Americans fighting for control of Suribachi’s slopes
cheered the raising of the flag.
Several hours later, more Marines headed up to the crest with a
larger flag. Joe Rosenthal, a photographer with the Associated
Press, met them along the way and recorded the raising of the
second flag along with a Marine still photographer and a motion-
picture cameraman.
By March 3, U.S. forces controlled all three airfields on the island,
and on March 26 the last Japanese defenders on Iwo Jima were
wiped out. Only 200 of the original 22,000 Japanese defenders
were captured alive. More than 6,000 Americans died taking Iwo
Jima, and some 17,000 were wounded.

Operation Detachment, the U.S. Marines’ invasion of Iwo Jima,
was launched. Iwo Jima was a barren Pacific island guarded
by Japanese artillery, but to American military minds, it was
prime real estate on which to build airfields to launch bombing
raids against Japan, only 660 miles away.
When the American flag was finally raised on Iwo Jima, the
memorable image was captured in a famous photograph that
later won the Pulitzer Prize.
(TMZ) – Kevyn Major Howard, the actor best known for playing
Rafterman in the war movie Full Metal Jacket, has died.
Howard’s family told TMZ that he died at a Las Vegas hospital surrounded by loved ones on Friday, Feb. 14.
According to the outlet, Howard had been in hospital in the
weeks before his death due to respiratory issues. His official
cause of death, however, has yet to be determined.
