HAPPY BIRTHDAY AIR FORCE!
Originally part of the United States Army, the United States Air Force was
formed as a separate branch of the military on 18 September 1947 under
the National Security Act of 1947. It is the most recent branch of the U.S.
military to be formed.
US Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron “Thunderbirds”
On 6 December 2013 the “Thunderbirds” announced their 2014 schedule and
the resumption of their appearances. Budget cuts in 2013 caused the team to
cease performances.
SERIES PREMIER ON THIS DAY IN 1965
Original run on CBS television: September 17, 1965 – March 28, 1971
Hogan’s Heroes won two Emmy Awards out of 12 nominations. Both wins
were for Werner Klemperer as outstanding supporting actor in a comedy,
in 1968 and 1969.

CONSTRUCTION BEGAN ON THIS DAY IN 1941
The Pentagon, headquarters of the United States Department of Defense, is located
in Arlington County, Virginia.
It was designed by architect George Bergstrom (1876–1955), and built by general contractor John McShain of Philadelphia. Ground was broken for construction
on September 11, 1941, and the building was dedicated on January 15, 1943.
General Brehon Somervell provided the major motive power behind the project,
Colonel Leslie Groves was responsible for overseeing the project for the U.S.
Army.

On September 11, 2001, the 60th anniversary of The Pentagon’s groundbreaking,
five al-Qaeda affiliated hijackers took control of American Airlines Flight 77, en
route from Washington Dulles International Airport to Los Angeles International
Airport, and deliberately crashed the Boeing 757 airliner into the western side
of the Pentagon at 9:37 am EDT as part of the September 11 attacks. All 64
people on the airliner were killed as were 125 people who were in the building.
SAM ELLIOTT IS 70 TODAY
Samuel Pack "Sam" Elliott was born in Sacramento, California and moved
from California to Oregon with his family during his teenage years, where he
graduated from David Douglas High School in Portland. He attended Clark
College in Vancouver, Washington. He worked in construction while studying
acting in Los Angeles and served in the California Army National Guard.
