RECORD BROKEN ON THIS DAY IN 1955
Colonel Horace A. Hanes with his F-100C, Super Saber, at Edwards
AFB, California after setting a supersonic speed record.
U.S. Air Force pilot Colonel Hanes, flew to Mach 1.25 at an altitude of
40,000 feet and broke the flight airspeed record at 822.135 mph at the
National Air Show. This was the first supersonic world speed record. It
was also the first speed record set at high altitude. All speed records
in the past were set close to the ground for measurement purposes,
The Mackay Trophy is awarded yearly by the U.S. Air Force
for the "most meritorious flight of the year".
NUMBER-ONE ON THIS DAY IN 1958
Elvis was in basic training at Fort Hood Army post in Texas when this
song hit the top of the Billboard chart. It was recorded as part of the
soundtrack for the motion picture King Creole. It also went to number
two for two weeks on the R&B chart. It was the first rock and roll single
to earn the RIAA designation of Gold Record.
THE VA WAS FORMED ON THIS DAY IN 1930
The United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is a
government-run military veteran benefit system which is
administered by the United States Secretary of Veterans
Affairs. It is the second largest department, after the
United States Department of Defense.
