The Phil Silvers Show (originally titled You’ll Never Get Rich) is a comedy
TV series which ran on CBS from 1955 to 1959. The series starred Phil
Silvers (center above) as U.S. Army Master Sergent Ernest G. Bilko. The
show won three consecutive Emmy Awards for Best Comedy Series.

TREATY SIGNED ON THIS DATE IN 1949
The North Atlantic Treaty was signed (above) on April 4, 1949, thus forming the
North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). It’s headquarters are located in
Brussels, Belgium. It is an intergovernmental military alliance with members
agreeing to mutual defense in response to an attack by any external party.
AIR FORCE ACADEMY ~ FORMED ON THIS DATE IN 1954
The U.S. Congress passed legislation in 1954 to begin construction of an Air Force Academy, and President Eisenhower signed it into law on 1 April of that year. The
legislation established an advisory commission to determine the site of the new
school. Among the panel members were Charles Lindbergh, and Lieutenant
General Herbert R. Harmon, who later became the Academy’s first superintendent. A
total of 582 sites were considered and the winner was Colorado Springs, Colorado. It
was announced by the Secretary of the Air Force, Harold E. Talbott in June of 1954.

Dwight David "Ike" Eisenhower, born October 14, 1890 – March 28, 1969,
was a five-star general in the U.S. Army and the 34th President of the United
States, from 1953 until 1961, and the last to be born in the 19th century.
