SINGER/ACTOR BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1909



Burl Icle Ivanhoe Ives (June 14, 1909 – April 14, 1995)

Folk singer Burl Ives recorded "A Little Bitty Tear" (1961) and 
was responsible for Christmas standards like "Holly Jolly
Christmas” (1965). On a local note, Ives was the Grand
Marshal of the 1975 Portland Rose Festival Parade.

MOVIE PREMIERED ON THIS DAY IN 1963

 

The epic historical drama film “Cleopatra” premiered at the Rivoli Theatre in
New York City. It was the most expensive film ever made up to that point and
almost bankrupted 20th Century-Fox. It later won four Academy Awards, and
was nominated for five more, including Best Picture
(which it lost to Tom Jones).

ACTOR CHRISTOPHER LEE HAS DIED AT 93

Sir Christopher Frank Carandini Lee (May 27, 1922 – June 7, 2015)

Lee died in a London hospital on Sunday morning June 7 after being admitted
for respiratory problems and heart failure. His wife delayed the announcement
until today in order to break the news to their family. The screen legend was
famous for his roles in numerous horror films, Lord of the Rings and Star Wars.

ACTOR GENE WILDER IS 82 TODAY

 

Gene Wilder (born Jerome Silberman in Milwaukee, Wisconsin)

Wilder won an Oscar for his first major film role in The Producers (1968) and 
played Willy Wonka in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory in (1971). He
also appeared in Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein (1974). He started
his film career playing a hostage in the 1967 feature Bonnie and Clyde.
