Comedian, actor and musician Steve Martin is best known films include 
The Jerk (1979), Father of the Bride (1991), Roxanne (1987), Three Amigos
(1986), Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988) and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles 
(1987). He hosted the Academy Awards in 2001, 2003 and 2010 and he has
hosted NBC’s Saturday Night Live on a number of occasions. 

While he has played banjo since an early age, and included music in his
comedy routines from the beginning of his professional career, he has
increasingly dedicated his career to music since the 2000s, acting less
and spending much of his professional life playing banjo, recording,
and touring with various bluegrass acts, including Earl Scruggs.

(History) – On this day in 1973, “American Graffiti,” a nostalgic coming-of-
age tale set  in 1962 on the streets and steeped in the car-centric culture of suburban California, was released in theaters across the U.S. The movie 
went  on to become a sleeper hit.   

“American Graffiti” was the second full-length feature film directed by George Lucas (below) who would later become best known for the blockbuster hit
“Star Wars” (1977) and its sequels.

On this day in 1945, the U.S. dropped an atomic bomb on Nagasaki. It came three days after the bombing of Hiroshima. An estimated 74,000
people were killed. Japan surrendered August 14.

On this day in 1974, President Richard Nixon formally resigned and
Gerald R. Ford (below) took his place, becoming the 38th president
of the United States.

President and Mrs. Nixon left the White House after his resignation.

Jerome John Garcia  (August 1, 1942 – August 9, 1995)

As one of its founders, Jerry Garcia performed with the Grateful Dead
for their entire thirty-year career (1965–1995). He was well known for
his distinctive guitar playing and was ranked 13th in Rolling Stone‘s
"100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time". Garcia was staying in a drug
rehabilitation facility when he died of a heart attack at the age of 
53.

(AP) – The stars of History Channel’s “American Pickers” never expected to
come across a hunk of rock and roll history, specifically a piece of Aerosmith’s history, while filming their hit TV show.

Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz of “American Pickers” were astonished to find the dilapidated van during filming in Chesterfield, a town about 100 miles west of Boston. The episode aired on July 30.

The property owner said the 1964 International Harvester Metro van was there
when he bought the land from someone with a connection to Aerosmith.

The reality show stars were able to get in contact with Ray Tabano, a founding member of Aerosmith, who confirmed it was the van the rockers used in the
1970s before they hit it

The pickers paid $25,000 for the van Wolfe called a “piece of American rock
and roll history.”

On this day in 1945, the U.S. B-29 bomber, known as the Enola Gay, dropped the first atomic bomb on an inhabited area. The bomb
named "Little Boy"(pictured below) was dropped over the center
of Hiroshima, Japan. An estimated 140,000 people were killed.

on this day in 1965.

Pope Paul VI reigned from 21 June 1963 to his death in 1978 at age 80.

Sir Alexander Fleming  (6 August 1881 – 11 March 1955) He died
in London of a heart attack.

Fleming was a Scottish physician, microbiologist, and pharmacologist. His
best-known discoveries are the enzyme lysozyme in 1923 and the world’s
first antibiotic substance benzylpenicillin (Penicillin G) from the mold
Penicillium notatum in 1928, for which he shared the Nobel Prize in
Physiology or Medicine in 1945 with Howard Florey and Ernst Boris
Chain. Modern antibiotics are tested using a method similar to Fleming’s
discovery.
