U.S. and British forces invaded Iraq from Kuwait on this day in 2003.

On this day in 1815, Napoleon Bonaparte entered Paris after his
escape from Elba and began his "Hundred Days" rule.

Harriet Beecher Stowe’s book "Uncle Tom’s Cabin," subtitled
"Life Among the Lowly," was first published on this day in 1852.

In Tokyo on this day in 1995, 12 people were killed and more than
5,500 others were sickened when packages containing the nerve
gas Sarin was released on five separate subway trains. The
terrorists belonged to a doomsday cult in Japan.

John Lennon and Yoko Ono were married in Gibraltar on this day
in 1969. Five days after their wedding, the couple staged a couple
of non-violent in-bed protests (below).

ROSS SIMPSON

President George W. Bush announced that U.S. forces had launched
a strike against "targets of military opportunity" in Iraq. The attack,
using cruise missiles and precision-guided bombs, were aimed at
Iraqi leaders thought to be near Baghdad.

On this day in 1987, Televangelist Jim Bakker, shown with wife
Tammy Faye, resigned from the PTL due to a scandal involving
model Jessica Hahn (below).

Jim Bakker turned 78 January 2.

Jessica Hahn will be 59 July 7.

The state of Nevada legalized gambling on this day in
1931.

Bob Dylan released his self-titled debut studio album on this day
in 1962. It was produced by Columbia’s legendary talent scout
John H. Hammond, who signed Dylan to the label, the album
features folk standards, plus two original compositions,
"Talkin’ New York" and "Song to Woody".

Bob Dylan (Robert Allen Zimmerman) will be 77 on May 24.

SANDY KOZEL

On this day in 1965, Cosmonaut Alexei Leonov (above) became the
first man to spacewalk when he left the Voskhod II space capsule
while in orbit around the Earth. He was outside the spacecraft for
about 20 minutes.

On this day in 1922, Mohandas K. Gandhi was sentenced to six years
in prison for civil disobedience in India. He served only 2 years of the sentence.

Adolf Hitler (left) and Benito Mussolini (center) held a meeting at the Brenner Pass on this day in 1940. The Italian dictator agreed to join
in Germany’s war against France and Britain during the meeting.

Terri Schiavo before she collapsed in her home from heart failure.

Terri Schindler-Schiavo (above) spent 13 years in a coma, attached
to a feeding tube and unable to communicate. She was taken off the
tube on this day in 2005.

John Edmund Andrew Phillips (August 30, 1935 – March 18, 2001)

Known as Papa John, Phillips was a member and leader of the vocal group
The Mamas & the Papas. He died of heart failure in Los Angeles at the age
of 65, just days after completing a recording sessions for a new album.

ROSS SIMPSON

On this day in 1968, U.S. troops in Vietnam destroyed a village
consisting mostly of women and children. The event is known
as the My-Lai massacre.

William Laws Calley Jr. will be 75 in June.

Terry Anderson, an Associated Press newsman, was taken hostage
in Beirut on this day in 1985. He was released on December 4,1991.

Physicist Robert H. Goddard launched the first liquid-fuel rocket on
this day in 1926. Goddard is known as the father of modern rocketry.

Jerry Lewis (Joseph Levitch)  (March 16, 1926 – August 20, 2017)

Comedian, actor, and muscular dystrophy telethon host Jerry Lewis 
formed one of history’s greatest comedy teams with Dean Martin. He
received Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Los Angeles Film
Critics Association, The American Comedy Awards, and the Venice
Film Festival.

Albert Einstein (March 14, 1879 – April 18, 1955) 

German-born theoretical physicist Albert Einstein 
developed the theory of relativity, one of the two
pillars of modern physics and is also known for its
influence on the philosophy of science. He received
the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics "for his services to
theoretical physics, and especially for his discovery
of the law of the photoelectric effect".

Quincy Delight Jones Jr. is 85 years old today.

Quincy Jones is an Influential record producer, arranger, and
musician of many film scores, classic albums, and hit songs. He
is perhaps best known for producing multiple albums by the great
Michael Jackson, including 1982’s Thriller and 1987’s Bad. He was
inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013.

Sir Michael Caine (Maurice Joseph Micklewhite Jr.)
is 85 years old today.

Across his fifty-year career,Michael Caine has had roles in The
Cider House Rules (1999), and The Italian Job (1969). He also

played Bruce Wayne’s butler Alfred Pennyworth in The Dark
Knight Trilogy (2005 – 2012). He served in the Korean War for
the British Army and was knighted in 2000.

Eli Whitney received a patent for his cotton gin on this day in
1794.

On this day in 1995, American astronaut Norman Thagard (above)
became the first American to enter space aboard a Russian rocket.

Norman Earl Thagard will turn 75 July 3. He retired in 1996.
