On August 25, 1939, The Wizard of Oz, which became one
of the best-loved movies in history, opened in theaters
around the United States.

The Wizard of Oz won a Best Song Oscar for “Over the
Rainbow,” which became one of Garland’s signature
hits. Garland won a special award at that year’s Oscar
ceremony, for Best Juvenile Performer.

Nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Picture
category, The Wizard of Oz lost to the
Civil Warera
epic Gone With the Wind. The Wizard of Oz won a

The 1960s pop duo Paul & Paula, who had a hit
with “Hey Paula.” 

Ray Hildebrand was an American singer that performed
in the 60’s group ‘Paul and Paula’. It has been reported
that Hildebrand passed away at his home in Kansas City,
Missouri last Friday. No cause of death was revealed.

MUSIC FESTIVAL OPENED ON THIS DAY

On August 15, 1969, the Woodstock music festival opened
on a patch of farmland in White Lake, a hamlet in the upstate
New York town of Bethel.

Promoters John Roberts, Joel Rosenman, Artie Kornfield and
Michael Lang originally envisioned the festival as a way to
raise funds to build a recording studio and rock-and-roll
retreat near the town of Woodstock, New York.
