Ed Byrnes (July 30, 1932 – January 8, 2020)

Byrnes was a popular actor, best known for his starring role in the ABC 
television series 77 Sunset Strip (1958 – 1964). He also was featured in
the 1978 film Grease as television teen-dance show host Vince Fontaine,
and was a charting recording artist with "Kookie, Kookie (Lend Me your 
Comb)" (with Connie Stevens). Byrnes died at his Santa Monica home 
of natural causes.

Known as "The King of Rock n’ Roll," he rose to prominence in
the late 1950s, becoming a legendary presence in cultural history
and the best-selling solo artist in the history of pop. He released
such #1 singles as "Hound Dog," "Jailhouse Rock," and "Stuck
on You."

Former figure skater Nancy Kerrigan (above) was clubber on her right leg
by an assailant on this day in 1994. The attacker was hired by the ex-
husband of her rival Tonya Harding.  Four men were later sentenced to
prison for the attack, including Harding’s ex-husband.

Nancy Kerrigan turned 50 last October.

Tonya Maxene Price (née Harding) became 49 in
November.

Charles Robert Darwin ( February 12, 1809 – April 19, 1832)

On this day in 1831, English naturlist Charles Darwin set out on a
voyage to the Pacific aboard the HMS Beagle. His discoveries
during the voyage helped him form the basis of his theories on
evolution.

HMS Beagle, a 10-gun, Cherokee-class brig sloop of the Royal
Navy’s survey service, sets sail from Plymouth, England on its
second voyage as a survey vessel. On board, at the invitation
of Beagle captain Robert FitzRoy, is a young biologist called
Charles Darwin.
