after being attacked by a Japanese destroyer. The boat was under
the command of Lt. John F. Kennedy (pictured above).

Elvis Presley performed his last live show for the next eight years in Pearl
Harbor, Hawaii. The show raised $62,000 for the U.S.S. Arizona memorial
fund. He bought a $100 ticket for himself then bought dozens more to give
to staff and patients at a military hospital.

THE ‘’BIG E’’ HAS BEEN DECOMMISSIONED

USS Enterprise in 1978

NEWPORT NEWS, VA (AP). –  The U.S. Navy has officially decommissioned the
world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.

During Friday’s ceremony at a Newport News shipyard, the USS Enterprise was
described as a "legendary" vessel that helped shape history. It served more than
50 years, playing a role in the Cuban Missile Crisis, Vietnam and the wars in Iraq
and Afghanistan.

The ship was retired from service in 2012. The Navy has spent the last few
years defueling its reactors. The ship will eventually be taken apart and its
metal recycled.

IT’S FLEET WEEK IN PORTLAND, OREGON

This 1935 aerial photo shows Navy ships arriving at the Portland
waterfront for the Rose Festival.

The City of Portland has been a favorite port of call for visiting Navy ships
since the beginning of the Rose Festival in 1907.

A total of ten ships from the U.S. Navy, the Royal Canadian Navy and the
U.S. Coast Guard are scheduled to arrive in Portland this week. The fleet
should begin departing on Monday morning, June 13.
