ANCHOR BEGAN ON THIS DAY IN 1962

Walter Cronkite began as anchor of "The CBS Evening News" on April 16,  
1962. On September 2, 1963, the CBS Evening News became network 
television’s first half-hour weeknight news broadcast which was extended
from its original 15 minutes, and telecast at 6:30 P.M. ET. Walter Cronkite 
retired from “The CBS Evening News” on March 6, 1981.

A Labor Day weekend interview in 1963 with President John F. Kennedy
and Walter Cronkite at Hyannis Port was to inaugurate the first half hour
CBS News, network national nightly news broadcast.

Samuel Andrew "Sam" Donaldson, Jr.

Reporter and news anchor Sam Donaldson has been with ABC News
from 1967 to the present. He is best known as the network’s White
House Correspondent (1977–89 and 1998–99). He also served as 
panelist and later co-anchor of the network’s Sunday news Program
"This Week". From 1956 to 1959, Donaldson served on active duty
as an artillery officer in the United States Army, attaining the rank
of Captain (USAR).

  Chester Robert "Chet" Huntley (December 10, 1911 – March 20, 1974)

Huntley was a newscaster and co-anchor of NBC’s The Huntley-Brinkley
Report
for 14 years beginning in 1956. He began his radio newscast
career at Seattle‘s KIRO-AM and worked his way down to Oregon and
Portland’s KGW-AM radio from 1936 to 1937 where he was a writer,
newscaster, and announcer.
