Elvis Aaron Presley  (January 8, 1935 – August 16, 1977)

 

Rock music legend Elvis Presley died in Memphis, Tennessee. The
death of the “King of Rock and Roll” brought legions of mourning fans
to Graceland, his mansion in Memphis. Doctors said he died of a heart
attack, likely brought on by his addiction to prescription barbiturates.

 

In what later became known as Victory Day, an official announcement
of Japan’s unconditional surrender to the Allies is made public to the world on August 14, 1945. Japan formally surrendered in writing two weeks later, on September 2, 1945.

Even though Japan’s War Council, urged by Emperor Hirohito, had
already submitted a declaration of surrender to the Allies, via
ambassadors.

On August 3, 1958, the U.S. nuclear submarine Nautilus
accomplished the first undersea voyage to the geographic
North Pole. The world’s first nuclear submarine, the Nautilus
dived at Point Barrow, Alaska, and traveled nearly 1,000 miles
under the Arctic ice cap to reach the top of the world.

At 10:56 p.m. EDT, American astronaut Neil Armstrong (above),
240,000 miles from Earth, spoke these words to more than a
billion people listening at home: “That’s one small step for
man, one giant leap for mankind.” Stepping off the lunar
landing module Eagle, Armstrong became the first human to
walk on the surface of the moon.
