MEMORIAL DEDICATED ON THIS DAY IN 1954

The United States Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) is a U.S.
military monument located at the back entrance to Arlington National Cemetery
in Arlington, Virginia. The memorial, built after World War II, is dedicated to all
personnel of the United States Marine Corps who have died in the defense of
the U.S. since 1775. The design of the memorial by Horace W. Peaslee and
sculpture by sculptor Felix Weldon, was based on the iconic photograph of the
raising of the second flag on Mount Suribachi by Associated Press combat
photographer Joe Rosenthal (below).

PHOTOGRAPH WILL SELL FOR COLD CASH
(Fox News) – A photo purportedly showing the iceberg that sank the Titanic is
expected to sell for over $15,000 when it is auctioned in the U.K. on Saturday.
Henry Aldridge & Son is auctioning the remarkable photo and a fascinating
document that accompanies it. The photograph was taken by the chief steward
of the liner Prinz Adalbert on the morning of April 15, 1912. The Titanic, which
struck an iceberg at 11.40 p.m. ship’s time on April 14, sank just over two hours
later with the loss of more than 1,500 lives.
