David Ramon "Dave" Toschi

(July 11, 1931 – January 6, 2018)

Dave Toschi, the lead detective in San Francisco’s unsolved
Zodiac serial-killer case of the 1960s and ‘70s, and who
served as the model for Harry Callahan, Clint Eastwood’s
"Dirty Harry" movie character, has died. 

His daughter said Toschi died Saturday at his home in San
Francisco after a prolonged illness.

Toschi’s stylish detective work immediately caught the eye of
Hollywood, with Steve McQueen basing his character in the
1968 film “Bullitt” after him. (FoxNews)

in the 2007 movie “Zodiac,” based on the killings.

The Portland, Oregon Police Bureau’s Canine Unit hosted an open house
and dedication ceremony for the newly created Canine Memorial, located
in front of the Canine Unit office and public safety building at 4735 East
Burnside Street, formerly Southeast Precinct. 

The memorial project was made possible through countless hours of 
work by local artist Richard A. Moore III, as well as many donors, such
as the Portland Police Historical Society and Adventist Credit Union,
following the tragic shooting death of Portland Police K-9 Mick (above)

. The show starred Jack Webb reprising his role as Sgt. Joe Friday,
and his partners, including Ben Alexander as Officer Frank Smith. The
show originally aired until August 23, 1959.
