James Abram Garfield
(November 19, 1831 – September 19, 1881)
President James A. Garfield, who had been in
office just under four months, succumbed to
wounds inflicted by an assassin 80 days
earlier, on July 2.
On September 18, 1793, George Washington laid the cornerstone
to the United States Capitol building, the home of the legislative
branch of American government. The building would take nearly
a century to complete, as architects came and went, the British
set fire to it and it was called into use during the Civil War.
Today, the Capitol building, with its famous cast-iron dome
and important collection of American art, is part of the Capitol
Complex, which includes six Congressional office buildings
and three Library of Congress buildings, all developed in the
19th and 20th centuries.

The 1994–95 Major League Baseball strike was the eighth and
longest work stoppage in baseball history, as well as the fourth
in-season work stoppage in 22 years. The strike began on
August 12, 1994, and resulted in the remainder of that season,
including the postseason and the World Series, being canceled.
This was the first time in ninety years, since 1904, that a World
Series was not played. The strike was suspended on April 2,
1995, after 232 days, making it the longest such stoppage in
MLB history and the longest work stoppage in major league.
After decades of bloody animosity, representatives of Israel
and Palestine met on the South Lawn of the White House
and sign a framework for peace.
The “Declaration of Principles” was the first agreement between
the Israelis and Palestinians towards ending their conflict and
sharing the holy land between the River Jordan and the
Mediterranean Sea that they both claim as their homeland.
