people attended.

Till, a 14-year-old black youth who they claim “made some remarks”
and whistled at Bryant’s wife.

A divorce decree was issued for Britain’s Charles and Princess Diana
on this day in 1996. This was the official end to the 15-year marriage.

One of the major disasters in 19^th century around the world was the eruption
of the volcano Krakatau in western Pacific Ocean, Indonesia.

The volcano erupted on this day in 1883 and killed thousand people on the
other islands near it. The volcanic dust was thrown into the atmosphere
and affected the weather around the world, and people as far away as Britain
and the United States began to see bizarre red sunsets caused by particles
in the atmosphere.

On this day in 1859, the first oil well was successfully drilled in the
U.S. by Colonel Edwin L. Drake (below) near Titusville, PA.

Drake Well Museum in Titusville, PA is on the site where Edwin L.
Drake drilled the world’s first oil well in 1859 and launched the
modern petroleum industry.

Ulysses S. Grant (Hiram Ulysses Grant)
(April 27, 1822 – July 23, 1885)

Former president Ulysses S. Grant working on his memoirs just
weeks before he died. After a year-long struggle with cancer,
surrounded by his family, Grant died at 8 o’clock in the morning
in the Mount McGregor cottage on July 23, 1885, at the age of 63.

Britain’s Prince Andrew married Sarah Ferguson at Westminster
Abbey in London on this day in 1986. They divorced in 1996.

On this day in 1984, Miss America, Vanessa Williams, turned in her
crown after it had been learned that nude photos of her appeared 
in "Penthouse" magazine. She was the first to resign the title.

Vanessa Lynn Williams turned 55 March 18.

Golfer Tiger Woods wins career Grand Slam on this day in 2000.

to Lt. Philip Mountbatten was announced.
 

On this day in 1997, Mike Tyson was banned from the boxing ring
and fined $3 million for biting the ear of opponent Evander Holyfield
during their bout on June 22, 1997 (below).

Actor Rodney Stephen Steiger
(April 14, 1925 – July 9, 2002)

Cited as "one of Hollywood’s most charismatic
and dynamic stars", Steiger died of pneumonia
and kidney failure as a result of complications
from surgery for a gall bladder tumor on July 9,
2002, in Los Angeles. He was 77.

his only Oscar for playing Gillespie, a police chief in the
1969 film The Heat of the Night (1967).

Popular actor Thomas Jeffrey Hanks is 62 today.

Legendary actor Tom Hanks has won back-to-back Academy Awards for
Best Actor for his roles in Philadelphia in 1993 and Forrest Gump in
1994. He has starred in many other classics, including Cast Away 
(2000), The Green Mile (1999), Saving Private Ryan (1998), and Apollo
