Several thousand people gather in the Daley Center

Several thousand people gather in the Daley Center Plaza in downtown Chicago on Sept. 14, 2001, for a memorial service to honor those killed
in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Cities across the country held similar
events after President George W. Bush declared Sept. 14 a day of
prayer.

On this day in 1814, Francis Scott Key wrote the "Star-Spangled
Banner," a poem originally known as "Defense of Fort McHenry,"
after witnessing the British bombardment of Fort McHenry, MD,
during the War of 1812 (above). The song became the official U.S. national anthem on March 3, 1931.

Margaret Higgins Sanger (Margaret Louise Higgins)
(September 14, 1879 – September 6, 1966) 

Margaret Sanger was an American birth control activist, sex
educator, eugenicist, writer, and nurse. Sanger popularized
the term "birth control", opened the first birth control clinic in
the United States, and established organizations that evolved
into the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

Paul Albert Anka was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Legendary singer-songwriter Paul Anka released hits like "Put Your Head
on my Shoulder" "You Are My Destiny" and "Diana." He wrote music for
Tom Jones, including his biggest hit "She’s a Lady."

SINGER/SONGWRITER DIED AT 82


Bonny "Mack" Rice (November 10, 1933 – June 27, 2016)


Sometimes credited as Sir Mack Rice, the songwriter and singer died at
his Detroit home on June 27 from complications of Alzheimer’s disease.
 
His best-known composition, and biggest hit as a solo performer, was
"Mustang Sally." He also wrote "Respect Yourself" with Luther Ingram.

SINGER RANDY NEWMAN IS 72 TODAY


Randall Stuart "Randy" Newman was born in Los Angeles, California.

Singer/songwriter, composer, and arranger Randy Newman composed the 
music for Toy Story in 1995. He has won two Academy Awards, and has
been nominated for twenty. In 2007, he was inducted as a Disney Legend.

His early songs were recorded by Gene Pitney, Jerry Butler, Petula Clark,
Dusty Springfield, Jackie DeShannon, the O’Jays and The Fleetwoods,
among others. Newman has credited The Fleetwoods with giving him his
first national break when the trio recorded his song, "They Tell Me It’s
Summer", as the B-side of one of their eleven hit singles.

WONDER – WRIGHT WEDDING ON THIS DAY IN 1970

Stevie Wonder ( born Stevland Hardaway Judkins) and Syretta Wright

At the age of 20, singer Stevie Wonder married 24 year old Syreeta Wright, a
songwriter and former Motown secretary. The couple worked together on the 
his album, Where I’m Coming From; with Wonder writing the music, and Wright
helping with the lyrics. The two divorced two years later.

Wright died on July 6, 2004 of congestive heart failure, a result of chemotherapy
and radiation treatments she was receiving for breast and bone cancers. She
was 57 years old.
