SPORTS CARD SOLD FOR RECORD AMOUNT

A Mickey Mantle baseball card is now the most expensive piece of sports  memorabilia : NPR

(CBS News) – A mint condition Mickey Mantle baseball card sold
for $12.6 million Sunday, blasting into the record books as the
most ever paid for sports memorabilia in a market that has
grown exponentially more lucrative in recent years.

The rare Mantle card eclipsed the record just posted a few months
ago — $9.3 million for the
jersey worn by Diego Maradona when
he scored the contentious "Hand of God" goal in soccer’s 1986
World Cup.

BIRTH OF THE NFL ON THIS DAY IN 1920

On August 20, 1920, seven men, including legendary all-around
athlete and football star Jim Thorpe, met to organize a professional football league at the Jordan and Hupmobile Auto Showroom in
Canton, Ohio. The meeting led to the creation of the American Professional Football Conference (APFC), the forerunner to the
hugely successful National Football League.

PITCHING ACE THROWS FIRST NO -HITTER

On August 14, 1971, St. Louis Cardinals ace Bob Gibson threw
the first no-hitter of his storied career. Gibson’s heroics helped
his team sail to an 11-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Gibson died on October 2, 2020, at age 84, under hospice care
after fighting pancreatic cancer for more than a year.
