Hopelessly trapped at Yorktown, Virginia, British General
Lord Cornwallis surrendered 8,000 British soldiers and
seamen to a larger Franco-American force, effectively
bringing an end to the American Revolution.
On September 4, 1886, Apache leader Geronimo surrendered to
U.S. government troops. For 30 years, the Native American warrior
had battled to protect his tribe’s homeland; however, by 1886 the Apaches were exhausted and outnumbered. General Nelson Miles accepted Geronimo’s surrender, making him the last Native
American warrior to formally give in to U.S. forces and signaling
the end of the Indian Wars in the Southwest.

The Great Fire of London was a major conflagration that swept
through the central parts of London from Sunday, 2 September
to Thursday, 6 September 1666. The fire gutted the medieval
City of London inside the old Roman city wall. The death toll is
generally thought to have been relatively small, although some
historians have challenged this belief.
The fire started in a bakery shortly after midnight on Sunday, 2 September, and spread rapidly.
