LOS ANGELES (AP) — Dana Wynter, who ran from the Pod People in the 1956 science-fiction classic "Invasion of the Body Snatchers," has died in Southern California. She was 79. Her son, Mark Bautzer, told the Los Angeles Times the actress died Thursday, May 5th, of congestive heart failure. She appeared in film and television for more than forty years.
The first newspaper cartoon in America was political in nature (above) and was drawn and originally published by Benjamin Franklin in The Pennsylvania Gazette. It appeared as part of an editorial by Franklin commenting on ‘the present disunited state of the British Colonies. The woodcut drawing entitled ‘Join or Die’ pictures a divided snake in eight pieces representing as many colonial governments.The drawing was based on the popular superstition that a snake that had been cut in two would come to life if the pieces were joined before sunset. The drawing was soon reproduced in other newspapers.
The R&B vocalist Lloyd Price is best know for one his biggest million-selling hits “Personality” (1959), from which he received his nickname. His first recording, “Lawdy Miss Clawdy” was a huge hit on the Specialty Records label in 1952. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. On March 9, of 2010, Price was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. He currently manages Icon Food Brands, which makes a line of primarily Sothern-style foods.
Nokie Edwards (born Nole Floyd Edwards), began playing a variety of string instruments by the age of five including the steel guitar, banjo, mandolin, violin, and the bass. His moved from Oklahoma to Puyallup, Washington. During his late teen’s he began playing in numerous country bands in the area. In 1958 country singing artist Buck Owens relocated from California to Tacoma, Washington as owner of radio station KAYE. Prior to the formation of The Buckaroos with Don Rich, Nokie Edwards played guitar with Owens and the new band he formed in the area and also in the house band on KTNT-TV in the same building. This is where Edwards met Don Wilson and Bob Bogle, founders of The Ventures. In 2008, Edwards was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame along with The Ventures.
Singer-songwriter Sonny Curtis was a teenage pal and band member with the great Buddy Holly in Lubbock, Texas. Although Curtis had gone on the road with other musicians by the time Buddy formed The Crickets in 1957, Sonny joined the group after Holly’s untimely death in 1959, and soon took the lead vocalist role in addition to lead guitar.
