ETHEL BARRYMORE

Ethel Barrymore was a member of the famous Barrymore family of actors. She
was the sister of actors John Barrymore and Lionel Barrymore, and the great-
aunt of actress Drew Barrymore. Ethel Barrymore was a highly regarded stage
actress in New York City and a major Broadway performer. Many today consider
her to be the greatest actress of her generation.

VJ-DAY ON THIS DATE IN 1945

The famous kiss in New York’s Times Square celebrating the surrender of Japan.

On Friday, 15 August 1945 Japan surrendered and the surrender documents were
finally signed during a formal ceremony aboard the deck of the American battleship
U.S.S. Missouri in Tokyo Bay (below) on the morning of 2 September 1945, officially ending the war.
