First issue, 1941

(AP) – Joe Simon, the co-creator of star-spangled comic book hero Captain
America, has died at 98, his family announced. Simon, a writer, editor and
artist, passed away late Wednesday in New York after a short illness.

“The Ol’ Pea-Picker” as an announcer at WOPI-AM in Bristol, Tennessee

“Sixteen Tons” spent ten weeks at number one on the country charts
and eight weeks at number one on the pop charts, and made Ford a
crossover star. It became Ford’s ‘signature song.’

Tiny Tim and Miss Vicki Budinger (above) were married on “The Tonight
Show” with Johnny Carson. It attracted 45 million viewers and was, at the
time,  the shows biggest audience ever.
