Artie Shaw (Arthur Jacob Arshawsky)
(May 23, 1910 – December 30, 2004)
Shaw is widely regarded as "one of jazz’s finest clarinetists.” His
first instrument was the saxophone, but he switched to the clarinet
by the time he had left home at 16 to tour with a band. Artie Shaw
led one of the country’s most popular big bands in the late 1930s
through the early 1940s.Their signature song was a 1938 version
of Cole Porter‘s "Begin the Beguine".
