with an agreement signed in Gdansk that ended a 17-day strike.

Lech Walesa, anti-communist leader of Solidarity in Poland.

Jack the Ripper’s first victim, Mary Ann Nichols was found dead
in London on this day in 1888.

Mary Ann Nichols throat had been slit and her body
horribly mutilated. At the time of her death the East
London Observer guessed her age at 30-35.

It was on this day in 1969.

Undefeated world heavyweight boxing champion Rocky Marciano and two
other men died when their light plane apparently lost power and crashed
in a cow pasture near Newton, Iowa.

Sir George Ivan Morrison is 83 years old today and was born in
Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Irish musician Van Morrison is best known to American audiences for his
hits "Brown-Eyed Girl" and "Moondance." He released his 36th studio
album, Keep Me Singing, in 2016. His father’s impressive record collection
inspired him to pursue music.

The space shuttle Challenger was launched on this day in 1983 with Guion S. Bluford Jr. aboard. He was the first African American to
travel in space when the shuttle embarked on its third mission.

Guion Stewart Bluford Jr. will be 76 on November 22.

Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (Godwin)

British author Mary Shelley is best known for her Gothic novel
Frankenstein. Her less famous works include novels such as
Valperga, Perkin Warbeck, and The Last Man.

Baseballs Ty Cobb made his major league batting
debut with the Detroit Tigers on this day in 1905.

One of the major disasters in 19^th century around the world was the eruption
of the volcano Krakatau in western Pacific Ocean, Indonesia.

The volcano erupted on this day in 1883 and killed thousand people on the
other islands near it. The volcanic dust was thrown into the atmosphere
and affected the weather around the world, and people as far away as Britain
and the United States began to see bizarre red sunsets caused by particles
in the atmosphere.

On this day in 1859, the first oil well was successfully drilled in the
U.S. by Colonel Edwin L. Drake (below) near Titusville, PA.

Drake Well Museum in Titusville, PA is on the site where Edwin L.
Drake drilled the world’s first oil well in 1859 and launched the
modern petroleum industry.

Brian Epstein was found dead in his home from an overdose of
sleeping pills on this day in 1967. Epstein first discovered The
Beatles in November 1961.

ended guaranteed cash payments to the poor and demanded work
from recipients.

James Edward Burton was born in Dubberly, Louisiana.

Since the 1950s, Burton has recorded and performed with an
array of notable singers, including Elvis Presley, Ricky Nelson,
Johnny Cash, The Everly Brothers, Merle Haggard, Jerry Lee
Lewis, Glen Campbell, Roy Orbison, Vince Gill and the list 
goes on.

Burton has been a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
since 2001. He has also been recognized by the Rockabilly Hall
of Fame and the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum.

Critic Mark Demming writes that "Burton has a well-deserved
reputation as one of the finest guitar pickers in either country
or rock, Burton is one of the best guitar players to ever touch
a fretboard."
