TIM MAGUIRE

President William McKinley was shot and mortally wounded on this
day in 1901 (he died eight days later) by Leon Czolgosz (below). The
American anarchist was executed the following October.

George Roger Waters is 74 years old today.

Roger Waters was the Bass player, composer, vocalist, and front man of the
English rock band Pink Floyd, the group known for songs like "Shine On
You Crazy Diamond." He was the chairman of the Cambridge Youth
Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament at age fifteen. Waters helped
compose the soundtrack to the 1970 documentary The Body.

Waters left Pink Floyd in 1985 and began a legal dispute with the remaining
members over their use of the band’s name and material. They settled out
of court in 1987, and nearly eighteen years passed before he performed
with them again. As a member of Pink Floyd, Waters was inducted into
the U.S. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 and the UK Music Hall of
Fame in 2005

The Mongol conqueror Ghengis Khan died on this day in 1227.

Tennessee ratified the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution 
on this day in 1920. The Amendment guaranteed the right of all
American women to vote.

On this day in 1963, James Meredith graduated from the University
of Mississippi. He was the first black man to accomplish this feat.

Roberto Enrique Clemente Walker
(August 18, 1934 – December 31, 1972)

Hall of Fame MLB outfielder Roberto Clemente played for the Pittsburgh
Pirates from 1955 to 1972. He was named National League MVP in 1966
and was a 2-time World Series Champion, winning World Series MVP
honors in 1971. He died tragically in a 1972 plane crash while flying to
Nicaragua to tend to earthquake victims. Clemente would deliver milk
cans in order to help make ends meet while growing up.

Charles Robert Redford Jr. is 81 years old today.

Actor and director Robert Redford founded the Sundance Film Festival. He starred
in classic films such as All the President’s Men (1976), The Sting (1973), and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) . His 1980 directorial debut, Ordinary People, received the Academy Award for Best Picture and earned him the Academy Award
for Best Director.

Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz (August 13, 1926 – November 25, 2016)

Infamous Cuban dictator and revolutionary Fidel Castro came to power in
1959 and served as his country’s Prime Minister until 1976 and its President
from 1976 to 2008.

Present day Mexico City was captured by Spanish conqueror
Hernando Cortez from the Aztec Indians on this day in 1521.

Sir Alfred Joseph Hitchcock  (13 August 1899 – 29 April 1980)

Iconic director Alfred Hitchcock is known as The Master of Suspense
for his classic films such as Psycho (1960), Rear Window (1954), North
by Northwest (1959), Vertigo (1958),  and The Birds ( 1965).  As one of
the most influential filmmakers of all-time, he directed over 50 feature
films.

Pope Saint John Paul II (Karol Józef Wojtyła)
(May 18, 1920 – April 2, 20005)

Pope Paul II was the second longest-serving pope in history who
was the leader of the Catholic Church from 1978 to 2005. He was
one of the most travelled world leaders in history, visiting 129
countries during his pontificate and helping end Communist rule
in his native Poland and eventually all of Europe. He was one of
the most influential leaders of the 20th century.

On this day in 1804 the “Corps of Discovery”–featuring approximately
45 men (although only an approximate 33 men would make the full
journey)–left St. Louis for the American interior.

Skylab, America’s first space station, was successfully launched into
an orbit around the earth on this day in 1973. Eleven days later, U.S.
astronauts Charles Conrad, Joseph Kerwin, and Paul Weitz made a
rendezvous with Skylab, repairing a jammed solar panel and also
conducting scientific experiments during their 28-day stay aboard
the space station.

George Walton Lucas Jr. is 74 years old today.

George Lucas began his collegiate career studying anthropology
at Modesto Junior College, then transferred to the University of
Southern California School of Cinematic Arts. He attempted to join
the U.S. Air Force after graduation but they wouldn’t accept him
because of the number of speeding tickets on his record, so
instead he re-enrolled at USC as a graduate student in film
production.

Francis Albert Sinatra (December 12, 1915 – May 14, 1998)

Frank Sinatra was one of the most popular and influential musical
artists of the 20th century and one of the best-selling music artists
of all time, having sold more than 150 million records worldwide.
