MARK HATFIELD HAS DIED AT 89
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Former Sen. Mark Hatfield, an outspoken critic of war
whose liberal views often put him at odds with fellow Republicans, died Sunday
at the age of 89.
Hatfield, who had become increasingly frail in recent years, died at a Portland
residence, said Gerry Frank, a longtime friend and former aide. The former
senator’s death was first reported by The Oregonian newspaper.
Also a former governor, Hatfield was the longest serving U.S. senator in Oregon
history, serving five terms from 1967 to 1997.

city of Hiroshima on Monday, August 6, 1945, followed by the detonation of the
second atomic bomb, “Fat Man” over Nagasaki on August 9. Within the first two
to four months of the bombings, the acute effects killed 90,000–166,000 people
in Hiroshima and 60,000–80,000 and 60,000–80,000 in Nagasaki, with roughly
half of the deaths in each city occurring on the first day. The Enola Gay (above)
