The above motto first appeared on U.S. coins during the Civil War in 1864

The 84th Congress passed a joint resolution "declaring IN GOD WE TRUST the
national motto of the United States." The law was signed by President Eisenhower
and the motto was progressively added to paper money over a period from 1957
to 1966. 

       Victor George Atiyeh (February 20, 1923 – July 20, 2014)

The 32nd Governor of Oregon died this evening of renal failure at a hospital
in Portland, after a fall sustained at his home on July 5. Vic Atiyeh served as
governor for eight years from 1979 through 1987. As of this year, Atiyeh is
the last Republican to serve as governor of Oregon.
