Jolly Rancher hard candies made their first appearance in
1949 and are still popular among candy lovers today.

The Jolly Rancher Company was founded by Bill and Dorothy
Harmsen from Golden, Colorado, after failing to launch a
ice
cream
company.

The couple had moved to Colorado from Minnesota in 1942. Bill
was a pilot for Continental Airlines, but he dreamed of owning
his own business.

The beloved Jolly Rancher first made its appearance at the
end of the decade in 1949, Hersheyland reported.

The popular sucking candy joined the Hershey Company
family in 1996.

FILM PREMIERED ON THIS DAY IN 1990

Dances With Wolves (Review) - YouTube

On November 4, 1990, Dances with Wolves, a film about an
American Civil Warera soldier and a group of Sioux Native
Americans that stars Kevin Costner and also marked his
directorial debut, premiered in Los Angeles. The film, which
opened across the United States on November 21, 1990,
was a surprise box-office success and earned 12 Academy
Award nominations, including Best Actor for Costner.

Dances with Wolves took home seven Oscars, including Best
Picture and Best Director, and solidified Costner’s place on
Hollywood’s A-list.

FORMER APOLLO ASTRONAUT HAS DIED

NASA announced Thursday, Thomas K. Mattingly, a key
commander during the Apollo 16 mission to the moon,
died on October 31 at age 87.     

NASA administrator Bill Nelson said “Astronaut Mattingly
was key to the success of our Apollo Program, and his
shining personality will ensure he is remembered throughout
history."

Martin was interred at the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles.

Martin, a lifelong heavy smoker, was diagnosed with lung cancer
at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in September 1993. He was told
that he would require surgery to prolong his life, but he rejected it.

He retired from public life in early 1995 and died of acute respiratory failure resulting from emphysema at his Beverly Hills home on
Christmas Day, 1995.
