The remains of the Unknown Soldier are committed to the ground during
the burial services of 1921.

The Tomb of the Unknowns (or Tomb of the Unknown Soldier as it is often called) is  
a monument dedicated to U.S. Service members who have died without their remains being identified. It is located in Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. On November
11, 1921, President Warren G. Harding officiated the interment ceremonies at the Cemetery. The Tomb of the Unknowns has been continuously guarded, 24 hours
a day, 7 days a week, since July 2, 1937.

The Marine Corps War Memorial (also called the Iwo Jima Memorial) is a military
statue located outside the walls of the Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington,
Virginia. The memorial was officially dedicated to all personnel of the U.S. Marine
Corps by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on November 10, 1954, which at the
time was the 179th anniversary of the Marine Corps.

A FLYING FIRST ON THIS DAY IN 1961

Major Robert White flew his X-15 rocket plane (above) at a world record speed
of 4,093 mph. The flight made him the first pilot to fly a winged craft at six times
the speed of sound (Mach 6). President John F. Kennedy used the occasion to
confer the most prestigious award in American aviation, the Robert J. Collier
Trophy, jointly to White and three of his fellow X-15 pilots; NASA’s Joseph
Walker, CDR Forrest S. Peterson of the United States Navy, and North
American Aviation test pilot Scott Crossfield.
