IT ALL BEGAN ON THIS DAY IN 1962

cuban missile crisis

The crisis began on Sunday October 14, 1962 when a United States Air Force U-2
aircraft on a photoreconnaissance mission captured photographic evidence of
Soviet missile bases under construction in Cuba (examples below).

The United States considered attacking Cuba via air and sea, and settled on a
military "quarantine" of Cuba. The confrontation ended on October 28, 1962,
when President Kennedy and U.N. Secretary-General U Thant reached a
public and secret agreement with Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev. The
quarantine officially ended on November 20, 1962.

(October 9, 1782 – June 17, 1866)

Lewis Cass  was a military officer and politician, born in Exeter, New Hampshire,
he moved with his family to Marietta, Ohio in 1800. He served as a brigadier
general during the War of 1812 and participated in the Battle of the Thames
and as a result he was rewarded for his military service by being appointed
Governor of the Michigan Territory by President James Madison on October
29, 1813, and served until 1831.On August 1, 1831, Cass resigned as governor
of the Michigan Territory to take the post of Secretary of War under President
Andrew Jackson, a position he would hold until 1836.

During his long political career he was an American ambassador to France, a U.S. Senator, representing Michigan. In 1848, Cass was the Democratic nominee for
president, but lost to Zachary Taylor. From 1857 to 1860, Cass also served as
Secretary of State under President James Buchanan. Lewis Cass was nationally
known as a leading spokesman for the very controversial Doctrine of Popular
Sovereignty, which would have allowed voters in the territories to determine
whether to make slavery legal instead of having Congress make the decision.

THE M*A*S*H HOT DOG CONNECTION!

packos-map

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio judge’s decision means a hot dog chain that
earned a place in pop culture on the TV series “M.A.S.H.” will stay in the family.

The family feud over ownership of Tony Packo’s played out in a Toledo courtroom Tuesday.

A county judge gave control of the company to a private restaurant group that
plans to put Tony Packo Jr. and his son back in charge of the chain.

The restaurant was made famous 35 years ago after being mentioned on six
episodes of “M.A.S.H.” during the show’s run in the 1970s and ’80s. The dogs
were favorites of cross-dressing Corporal Max Klinger on the show.

(Note: Klinger is played by real-life Toledo, Ohio native Jamie Farr, shown below.)

A dispute between descendants of the restaurant’s namesake erupted this
summer, causing both sides to make bids to take over the company thats
been a family tradition since 1932.
