THE BEATLES AT CANDLESTICK PARK ~ 1966

See the source image

The Beatles came together for their final live performance on this
day in history
, August 29, 1966.

The concert at Candlestick Park in San Francisco was never
announced as the band’s last dance, but there was plenty of
speculation that the boys were looking to call it quits, according
to The Beatles Bible.

Although the Fab Four made a surprise appearance on the rooftop
of the Apple building in London on Jan. 30, 1969, Ringo Starr wrote
in an anthology that it was clear the Candlestick Park performance
would be the band’s official finale.

Jerry Ivan Allison (August 31, 1939 – August 22, 2022)

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Jerry Allison, who played to screaming crowds as a member of the 1950s rock band Buddy
Holly and the Crickets and co-wrote some of their biggest hits,
died Monday.

Allison’s writing contributions included co-penning “That’ll Be
the Day” and “Peggy Sue.” He said he also co-wrote “Not Fade
Away” with Holly but went uncredited, due to the producer
allegedly switching his own name in instead.

MUSIC FESTIVAL OPENED ON THIS DAY

On August 15, 1969, the Woodstock music festival opened on a
patch of farmland in White Lake, a hamlet in the upstate New
York town of Bethel.

Promoters John Roberts, Joel Rosenman, Artie Kornfield and
Michael Lang originally envisioned the festival as a way to raise
funds to build a recording studio and rock-and-roll retreat near
the town of Woodstock, New York. The longtime artists’ colony
was already a home base for Bob Dylan and other musicians.

Despite their relative inexperience, the young promoters managed
to sign a roster of top acts, including the Jefferson Airplane, the
Who, the Grateful Dead, Sly and the Family Stone, Janis Joplin,
Jimi Hendrix, Creedence Clearwater Revival and many more.
