widely known as the "dead man’s hand".

Wild Bill Hickok was shot in the back of the head by Jack McCall
on this day in 1876.

Jack McCall (1852 or 1853 – March 1, 1877) was
also known as "Crooked Nose" or "Broken Nose 
Jack".

On this day in 1914, Germany declared war on Russia at the start 
of World War I.

Adolf Hitler (second from right) presided over the Olympic games as
they opened in Berlin on this day in 1936.

African American Jesse Owens was the star of Berlin, becoming
the first American in Olympic track and field history to win four
gold medals at a single Games. He won the 100-yard dash, the
long jump, 200-yard dash and the 4×100-yard relay.

In Warsaw, Poland, an uprising against Nazi occupation began on
this day in 1944. The revolt continued until October 2 when Polish
forces surrendered.

Herman Melville (August 1, 1819 – September 28, 1891)

Melville was an American novelist, short story writer, and poet
of the American Renaissance period. His best known works
include Typee (1846), a romantic account of his experiences
in Polynesian life, and his whaling novel Moby-Dick (1851).

MTV made its debut at 12:01am on this day in 1981. The first
video to be shown was "Video Killed the Radio Star" by the
Buggles.

"Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll". Those were the words TV audiences heard on August 1, 1981 when a brand new channel
called Music Television launched.

On this day in 1965, U.S. President Johnson (center) signed into law Social Security Act that established Medicare and Medicaid. It went

The Black Tom explosion on July 30, 1916, in Jersey City, New Jersey, was an
act of sabotage by German agents to destroy American-made munitions that
were to be supplied to the Allies in World War I.

The USS Indianapolis was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine on
this day in 1945. The ship had just delivered key components of the Hiroshima atomic bomb to the Pacific island of Tinian. Only 316 out
of 1,196 men aboard survived the attack.

Henry Ford (July 30, 1863 – April 7, 1947)

Henry Ford was an American industrialist and a business
magnate, the founder of the Ford Motor Company, and the
sponsor of the development of the assembly line technique
of mass production.

Actor Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger is 71 years old today.

Bodybuilder, actor, and politician who served as the governor of California
from 2003 to 2011. His best known films include Conan the Barbarian (1982) 
Predator (1987) The Terminator series (beginning in 1984) and Total Recall
(1990). In 1996 he portrayed Howard Langston in the holiday comedy film

On this day in 1914, World War I officially began when Austria-
Hungary declared war on Serbia.

On this day in 1932, Federal troops forcibly dispersed the "Bonus
Army" of World War I veterans who had gathered in Washington,
DC. They were demanding money they were not scheduled to
receive until 1945.

A U.S. Army bomber crashed into the 79th floor of New York City’s Empire State Building on this day in 1945. A total 14 people were
killed and 26 were injured.

Jacqueline Lee Kennedy Onassis (Bouvier)
(July 28, 1929 – May 19, 1994)

Jacqueline was the wife of the 35th President of the United States, John
F. Kennedy, and the First Lady of the United States from 1961 until his
assassination in 1963.

On October 20, 1968, she married Aristotle Onassis, a Greek shipping
magnate.  In 1994 she died in her sleep at age 64 from Non-Hodgkin
lymphoma.

(July 28, 1866 – December 22, 1943) 

Beatrix Potter was an English writer, illustrator,
natural scientist, and conservationist best known
for her children’s books featuring animals, such
as those in The Tale of Peter Rabbit.

The armistice agreement that ended the Korean War was signed at Panmunjon, Korea on this day in 1953.

The U.S. Congress asked for impeachment procedures against
President Richard Nixon on this day in 1974.

On this day in 1980, the deposed shah of Iran, Muhammad Riza
Pahlavi, died of cancer in a hospital near Cairo, Egypt.

Bob Hope (Leslie Townes Hope) (May 29, 1903 – July 27, 2003)

Bob Hope, was an English-American stand-up comedian, vaudevillian,
actor, singer, dancer, athlete, and author. With a career that spanned
nearly 80 years, Hope appeared in more than 70 short and feature films,
with 54 feature films with Hope as star, including a series of seven
"Road" musical comedy movies with Bing Crosby as Hope’s top-billed
partner.

In addition to hosting the Academy Awards show 19 times, more than
any other host, he appeared in many stage productions and television 
roles, and was the author of 14 books. Hope retired in 1997, and died at
the age of 100 in 2003, at his home in the Toluca Lake neighborhood of
Los Angeles.
