Meet the Beatles! was the first US Beatles album to be issued by
Capitol Records in both mono and stereo formats. It topped the
popular album chart on 15 February 1964 and remained at the
number one spot for eleven weeks before being replaced by The
Beatles’ Second Album.

Sir Roderick (Rod) David Stewart is 73 years old today.

Rod Stewart released over 60 hit singles and, in 2008, was named the 17th
most successful artist on the The Billboard Hot 100 Top All-Time Artists.

In 2006, he won a Grammy Award for the best Best Traditional Pop Vocal
Album for Stardust…The Great American Songbook Volume III. He has a
star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame which was received in 2007.

Kirk Douglas (Issur Danielovitch) is 102 years old today.

Legendary movie actor Kirk Douglas starred in 20,000 Leagues Under the
Sea (1954), Paths of  Glory (1957), Gunfight at the O.K Corral (1957), and
Spartacus (1960). Kirk Douglas became a legend on the silver screen,
receiving the Academy Honorary Award in 1996. He was a successful
competitive wrestler while in college and served in the U.S. Navy.

On this day in 1963, Dallas nightclub owner Jack Ruby (below) shot
and killed Lee Harvey Oswald live on national television.

On this day in 1971, hijacker Dan Cooper, known as D.B. Cooper, parachuted from a Northwest Airlines 727 over Washington state
with $200,000 in ransom money.

On this day in 1777, the Battle of Saratoga was won by American
soldiers during the Revolutionary War.

It was on this day in 1881. A picture from the Police Gazette,
showing a dying President Garfield being comforted by his
wife.

A 1954 Topps trading card depicting Garfield’s assassination
by Charles Guiteau. He was assassinated after only a few
months in office as the 20th president of the United States.

The sitcom was created by James L. Brooks and Allan Burns that
aired on CBS on this day in 1970 and ran until 1977. The show
received high praise from critics during its run with 29 Primetime
Emmy Awards, including the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding 
Comedy Series three years in a row (1975–1977) and earned
Moore the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress 
in a Comedy Series three times (1973, 1974, 1976) and continues
to be honored long after the final episode aired. In 2013, the Writers 
Guild of America ranked The Mary Tyler Moore Show No. 6 in its
list of the 101 Best Written TV Series of All Time.

this day in 1227.

Tennessee ratified the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution on
this day in 1920. The Amendment guaranteed the right of all women 
in America to vote. 

James Meredith graduated from the University of Mississippi on this
day in 1963. He was the first black man to accomplish this feat.

James Howard Meredith turned 85 in June.

Vladimir Nabokov’s controversial novel "Lolita" was published
on this day in 1958.

Vladimir Vladimirovich Nabokov (April 22, 1899 – July 2, 1977)

Charles Robert Redford Jr. is 82 years old today. He was born in
Santa Monica, California.

Actor and director Robert Redford founded the Sundance Film Festival. He
starred in classics such as All the President’s Men (1976), The Sting (1973),
and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969). His directorial debut,
Ordinary People (1980) received the Academy Award for Best Picture and
earned him the Academy Award for Best Director.
