TIM MAGUIRE

On this day in 1836, Connecticut-born gun manufacturer Samuel
Colt (1814-62) received a U.S. patent for a revolver mechanism
that enabled a gun to be fired multiple times without reloading.

In Hartford, Connecticut, Samuel Colt built the world’s largest private armament factory. The factory was not only the largest, it was the
world’s most advanced manufacturing facility.

On February 25, 1964, underdog Cassius Clay, age 22, defeated champion Sonny Liston in a technical knockout to win the world heavyweight boxing crown. The highly anticipated match took
place in Miami Beach, Florida. Clay, who later became known to
the world as Muhammad Ali, went on to become the first fighter
to capture the heavyweight title three times.

ROSS SIMPSON

On this day in 1898, the USS Maine sank when it exploded in Havana Harbor for unknown reasons. More than 260 crew members were
killed. The episode escalated tensions between the United States
and Spain and contributed to the outbreak of the Spanish-American

In Flemington, New Jersey on t his day in 1935, a jury found Bruno Richard Hauptmann guilty of the kidnapping and death of the infant
son of Charles and Anne Lindbergh. Hauptmann was later executed
for the crimes (below).

During World War II on this day in 1945, allied aircraft began bombing
the German city of Dresden. It was almost completely destroyed and
became a symbol of the “terror bombing” campaign against Germany,
which was one of the most controversial allied actions of the war.

On this day in 1964, The Beatles made the first of three record-
breaking appearances on "The Ed Sullivan Show." 73 million
people watched the show. It was their American TV debut.

During World War II on this day in 1943, the battle of Guadalcanal
ended with an American victory over Japanese forces.

THE SPRINGFIELD UNION, Massachusetts, February 9, 1943. 

Some 60,000 Allies forces fought on the island between August 1942
and February 1943.

These Japanese prisoners were among those captured by American
forces on Guadalcanal Island. 

CAMILLE BOHANNON

On this day in 1943 during World War II, the Soviets announced that
they had broken the Nazi siege of Leningrad, which had began in September of 1941. As many as 200,000 Soviet soldiers were killed between September 1941 and May 1943 in the fighting.

On January 18, 2018, Russian President Vladimir Putin puts flowers
on a monument at Nevsky Pyatachok near Kirovsk, marking the 75th
anniversary of the battle that broke the Seige of Leningrad, in St.
Petersburg, Russia.
 

On this day in 1912, after a two-month ordeal, the expedition of
British explorer Robert Falcon Scott (above) arrives at the South
Pole only to find that Roald Amundsen, the Norwegian explorer,
had preceded them by just over a month. Disappointed, the
exhausted explorers prepared for a long and difficult journey
back to their base camp.
