Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (DADT), the official United States policy on gays serving
in the military was announced by President Bill Clinton (below). It allowed
closeted members of the military to serve, while prohibiting those in the
military who were openly gay to serve. Prior to “don’t ask, don’t tell,” there
had been an outright ban on gays in the military.

Apollo 11 entered lunar orbit on this day in 1969.

Daedalus Crater was one of the sights seen as Apollo 11’s command module passed over the far side of the moon.

Baseball’s career hit leader Pete Rose (left) was sentenced on this
day in 1990 to five months in a Federal correctional institution for
filing false income-tax returns. The sentence did not permit parole,
so Rose would serve the full term.

Peter Edward Rose Sr. also known by his nickname "Charlie
Hustle", turned 77 on April 14.

A total 55 countries joined the boycott of the opening ceremony
in Moscow which began on this day in 1980.

On this day in 1858, in a speech in Springfield, IL, U.S.
Senate candidate Abraham Lincoln said the slavery
issue had to be resolved. He declared, "A house
divided against itself cannot stand."

On this day in 1963, 26-year-old Valentina Tereshkova went into orbit aboard the Vostok 6 spacecraft for three days. She was the first
female space traveler.

Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova turned 81 on March 6.

In Soweto on this day in 1976, thousands of school children revolted against the South African government’s plan to enforce Afrikaans as
the language for instruction in black schools

An 18-year old South African school boy is seen carrying a dying
13-year old Hector Pieterson.

On this day in 1961, Rudolf Nureyev defected from the Soviet Union
while in Paris, traveling with the Leningrad Kirov Ballet.

Nureyev entered a hospital in Paris, France on November 20, 1992 and
remained there until his death from AIDS complications at age 54.

church bombing that killed four girls shown on the memorial below.

Johnny Carson hosted NBC’s "Tonight Show" for the last time on
this day in 1992. He had been host for 30 years.

Laurence Kerr Olivier (Baron Olivier)  (May 22, 1907 – July 11, 1989)

English actor and director Laurence Olivier who, along with his
contemporaries Ralph Richardson and John Gielgud, dominated
the British stage of the mid-20th century. He also worked in films
throughout his career, playing more than fifty cinema roles. Late
in his career, he had considerable success in television roles.

Burt Freeman Bacharach is 90 years old today. He was born in
Kansas City, Missouri.

Burt Bacharach is a composer, songwriter, record producer, pianist, and
singer who has composed hundreds of popular hit songs from the late
1950s through the 1980s, many in collaboration with popular lyricist Hal
David. A six-time Grammy Award winner and three-time Academy Award 
winner, Bacharach’s songs have been recorded by more than 1,000
different artists. As of 2014, he had written 73 US and 52 UK Top 40 hits
and is considered one of the most important composers of 20th-century
popular music.
