A secret service agent thwarts as assassination attempt on President Gerald
Ford on this date in 1975. He apparently spotted a loaded .45 caliber semi
automatic handgun in the hands of Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme pointed
directly at the President when he reached out and wrestled it way from
her (below).

(August 26, 1910 – September 5, 1997)

Mother Teresa was known in the Catholic Church as Saint Teresa of
Calcutta. A controversial figure during her life and after her death,
Teresa was admired by many for her charitable work and was both 
praised and criticized for her opposition to abortion.

On this day in 1957, nine black students attempt to attend
Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. The situation
turned potentially violent and President Eisenhower sent in
the national Guard to escort the students to school.

The Ford Motor Company began selling the Edsel on this day in
1957. The car was so unpopular that it was taken off the market
only two years.

Los Angeles, CA, was founded by Spanish settlers on this day in
1781. The original name was "El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora La Reina
de Los Angeles de Porciuncula," which translates as "The Town of
the Queen of Angels."

On this day in 1888, George Eastman registered the name "Kodak"
and patented his roll-film camera (below). The camera took 100 exposures per roll.

On this day in 1972, swimmer Mark Spitz captured his seventh
Olympic gold medal in the 400-meter medley relay event at
Munich, Germany. Spitz was the first Olympian to win seven
gold medals.

Mark Andrew Spitz turned 67 on February 10.

Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter is 36 today.

Beyoncé is a  former member of the R&B girl group Destiny’s Child who
also became a widely successful solo artist. She has won a total of 22
Grammy Awards for songs such as "Single Ladies," "Drunk in Love"
and "Crazy in Love."  She won her first school talent show with her
rendition of "Imagine" by John Lennon.

British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, in a radio broadcast, announced that Britain and France had declared war on  Nazi
Germany. Germany had invaded Poland on September 1.

The Revolutionary War between the U.S. and Great Britain ended
with the Treaty of Paris on this day in 1783.

The NASA spacecraft Viking 2 landed on Mars on this day in 1976. The unmanned spacecraft took the first close-up, color photos of the
planet’s surface.

Vince Lombardi died in Washington, D.C. of cancer on

Poland’s Solidarity labor movement was born on this day in 1980 
with an agreement signed in Gdansk that ended a 17-day strike.

Jack the Ripper’s first victim found dead in London on this day
in 1888.

Itzhak Perlman in 1964.

Itzhak Perlman is 72 years old today.

Perlman is an Israeli-American violinist, conductor, and pedagogue. Over
the course of his career, he has performed worldwide, and throughout the
United States, in venues that have included a State Dinner at the White
House honoring Queen Elizabeth II, and a Presidential Inauguration, and
he has conducted the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and the Westchester Philharmonic. In 2015, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

On August 31, 1969, the evening before his 46th birthday,
Marciano was a passenger in a fatal small private plane
crash near an airfield outside Newton, Iowa.

The wreckage of the Cessna 172 lies under a large oak tree. Rocky
Marciano along with the pilot and another passenger died in the
crash.

Sir George Ivan Morrison is 72 years old today.

Known as "Van the Man", singer/songwriter Van  Morrison
1950s, Much of his music is structured around soul music
and R&B, such as the popular single "Brown Eyed Girl”.

Calvin Edwin Ripken Jr.

Hall of Fame shortstop and third baseman who played his entire 21-year career
with the Baltimore Orioles and earned the nickname Iron Man after setting the
MLB record for most consecutive games played with 2,632.

He was a 19-time All-Star, 2-time American League MVP, 2-time Gold Glove
winner, and League MVP, 2-time Gold Glove winner, and 8-time Silver Slugger
winner. His father and grandfather both played for the Orioles.
