captured. He had been on the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted list for five
years for several bombings including the 1996 Olympic bombing.

Walter "Walt" Whitman (May 31, 1819 – March 26, 1892)

American poet Walt Whitman is best known for his collections
Leaves of Grass and Drum-Taps. His 1865 poem "O Captain!
My Captain!" was written on the occasion of the death of
Abraham Lincoln.

Whitman dropped out of school at the age of eleven and, to
support his family, working as a law office assistant and a
newspaper apprentice.

Clinton Eastwood Jr. is 88 years old today.

Clint Eastwood gained fame as an iconic actor in such classic Western
films as A Fistful of Dollars (1967) and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
(1967) and as Detective Harry Callahan in the Dirty Harry franchise
beginning in 1971. He later became a renowned director, receiving the
Academy Awards for Best Director and Best Picture for his films
Unforgiven (1991) and Million Dollar Baby (2004). He also directed the
critically acclaimed films Mystic River (2003), Gran Torino (2009) and
American Sniper (2014). 

Clint Eastwood became a household name after
playing Rowdy Yates on the long-running CBS
Western series Rawhide.

On this day in 1934, the Dionne quintuplets were born near Callender, Ontario, to Olivia and Elzire Dionne. The babies were the first quint’s

Annette and Cecile Dionne are 84 today and are the two surviving
members of the Dionne Quintuplets.

Ian Lancaster Fleming (May 28, 1908 – August 12, 1964)

Fleming was an English author, journalist and naval intelligence
officer who is best known for his James Bond series of spy
novels.

the Brooklyn Dodgers to move to Los Angeles and that the New

Edward VIII (Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David)

On this day in 1972, The Duke of Windsor, who gave up the British throne in
1936 to marry an American divorcee, died at 77 in his home near Paris. He
was a smoker from an early age, was diagnosed with throat cancer and
underwent cobalt therapy.

Philip Edward Hartmann (September 24, 1948 – May 28, 1998)

Canadian born actor/comedian Phil Hartman garnered fame in 1986
when he joined the sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live. He
won fame for his impressions, particularly of President Bill Clinton,
and he stayed on the show for eight seasons. Given the moniker
"The Glue" for his ability to hold the show together and help other
cast members, Hartman won a Primetime Emmy Award for his SNL

On this day in 1961, America was asked by President Kennedy to
work toward putting a man on the moon before the end of the
decade.

On this day in 1977, "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope" opened
and became the largest grossing film to date.

In Houston on this day in 2006, former Enron Corp. chiefs Kenneth
Lay and Jeffrey Skillinng were convicted of conspiracy and fraud
for the downfall of Enron.

It was on this day in 1992, Jay Leno debuted as the new permanent
host of NBC’s "Tonight Show."

Comedian Billy Crystal (left) was Leno’s first guest on the show. He
also appeared on Leno’s final “Tonight Show” episode on February
6, 2014.

Norman Eugene "Clint" Walker (May 30, 1927 – May 21, 2018)

Clint Walker, who played the title character in the early ABC- TV western
"Cheyenne” (1955-1963) died Monday of congestive heart failure at a
hospital in Grass Valley, California.

In addition to "Cheyenne," he had small but visible roles in classic films
including 1956’s "The Ten Commandments" and 1967’s "The Dirty Dozen."

Charles A. Lindberg completed the first solo nonstop airplane flight across the Atlantic Ocean on this day in 1927. The trip began May 20.

The American branch of the Red Cross was founded by Clara Barton
on this day in 1881.

Clarissa "Clara" Harlowe Barton (December 25, 1821 – April 12, 1912)

Fourteen-year-old Bobby Franks (above) was murdered in a
"thrill killing" committed by Nathan Leopold Jr. and Richard
Loeb (below) on this day in 1924. The killers were students
at the University of Chicago.

On this day in 1959, the musical "Gypsy" opened on Broadway
and played 702 performances, closing on March 25, 1961 at the
Imperial Theatre.
