REMEMBER TELEVISION’S ‘’BIG MOUTH’’?

The Martha Raye Show is an hour-long comedy/variety show which
aired live on NBC. It actually began in 1951,under the umbrella title
All-Star Revue. Raye began as a monthly replacement for its Host
Sid Caesar. In 1954 it changed its name to The Martha Raye Show
and was hosted by Martha Raye, a Montana native, who called
herself "The Big Mouth." (1954).

THEY BOTH MET THEIR MAKER ON THIS DAY

Bonnie Elizabeth Parker (October 1, 1910 – May 23, 1934)
and Clyde Chestnut Barrow (March 24, 1909 – May 23, 1934)
The criminal couple Bonnie and Clyde traveled the Central United
States with their gang during the Great Depression. The couple
were known for their bank robberies, although they preferred to
rob small stores or rural funeral homes.
Their exploits captured the attention of the American press and
its readership during what is occasionally referred to as the
"public enemy era" between 1931 and 1934, when the couple
were ambushed and shot to death in Bienville Parish, Louisiana.
They are believed to have murdered at least nine police officers and
four civilians.

FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSICAL IN 1921
Deeply in debt and relegated to a shabby theater, the musical
Shuffle Along debuted at the Sixty-Third Street Music Hall on
May 23, 1921. The odds were stacked against the revue-style
show, written and performed by African Americans, but it ran
for over a year, making it the first major Black American musical
on the Great White Way.
Shuffle Along was written by Noble Sissle and Eubie Blake,
shown below, vaudeville veterans who worked together for
over six decades.

HISTORY WAS MADE ON THIS DAY
May 22, 1992 was the last "Tonight Show" with Johnny
Carson as host.
Carson presented retrospective of clips covering the
past 30 years. Carson said goodnight for the last time.
