Nazi Germany’s troops entered Paris on this day in 1940. As Paris became occupied loud speakers announced the implementation
of a curfew being imposed for 8 p.m.

Also on this same day in 1940, the Nazis opened their concentration camp at Auschwitz in German-occupied Poland.

Trans World Airlines Flight 847 was a flight from Cairo to San Diego with in 
route stops in Athens, Rome, Boston, and Los Angeles. On the morning of 
Friday, June 14, 1985 Flight 847 was
hijacked shortly after take off from
Athens. The hijackers were seeking the release of 700
Shi’ite Muslims from
Israeli custody.

United States Navy diver Robert Stethem (below) was murdered, and his
body was thrown onto the tarmac. Dozens of passengers were held hostage
over the next two weeks until released by their captors after some of their
demands were met.

On this day in 1777, The Continental Congress in Philadelphia adopted the
"Stars and Stripes" as the national flag of the United States. The Flag
Resolution stated "Resolved: that the flag of the United States be made
of thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars,
white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation." On May 20, 1916,
President Woodrow Wilson (below) officially proclaimed June 14 "Flag Day"
as a commemoration of the "Stars and Stripes."

the prestigious Wharton School of Business.

University in New York,

On this day in 1968, student militants occupied Hamilton Hall, the main
classroom building, and took a dean hostage for 24 hours. They stormed
into the office of the university’s president, ransacked files and smoked
his cigars. Over the next few days, hundreds of students would seize a
total of five campus
buildings.

The protests were part of a year of global tumult that included Vietnam’s
Tet Offensive, the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F.
Kennedy and mass demonstrations at the Democratic National Convention
in Chicago.

had been found on September 1 by a
U.S. and French expedition 
560 miles off Newfoundland. The luxury liner had been missing 
for 73 years. The tragedy of the RMS Titanic rocked the world
on April 15, 1912.

Robert Dean Stethem (November 17, 1961 – June 15, 1985)

Stethem was a U.S. Navy Seabee who was murdered by Hezbollah terrorists
while aboard flight 847 during the
hijacking.
