LAST MERCURY FLIGHT ON THIS DATE IN 1963

Astronaut Gordon Cooper (above) was launched into space on May 15,
1963 aboard the Mercury-Atlas  (Faith 7) spacecraft. After 22 Earth orbits,
34 hours, 19 minutes and 49 seconds, traveling 546,167 miles, Cooper
logged more time in space than all five previous Mercury astronaut’s
combined. His return to Earth brought Project Mercury to a close.

FIRST ACADEMY AWARDS ON THIS DATE 1929

The first Academy Award ceremony was held (above) at the Hotel Roosevelt
in Hollywood to honor outstanding film achievements for the 1927/1928 film
season. Tickets cost $10 to attend and the ceremony lasted a total of five
minutes. There were 15 awards vs. 25 today.

PASTA DEBUTED ON THIS DATE IN 1965

The pasta SpaghettiO’s was created by Heinz Ficher and Donald Goerke
(below) after a year-long internal study of the appropriate shape for a kid-
friendly spaghetti. Rejected shapes included cowboys, spacemen, stars,
and sports shapes. The new product was introduced by the Campbell Soup
Company under the Franco-American brand.
