GOV. WALLACE SHOT ON THIS DATE IN 1972

Alabama Governor George Wallace (above) was shot five times by Arthur Bremer
(below) while campaigning as a Democratic candidate for president in Laurel,
Maryland. One of the bullets lodged in Wallace’s spinal column and he was left
paralyzed permanently from the waist down. Three others were wounded in the
shooting and also survived. Bremer was found guilty and sentenced to 63 years,
53 years after an appeal in a Maryland prison for the shooting. After 35 years of incarceration, Bremer was released from prison on November 9, 2007.

EDDY ARNOLD ~ (MAY 15, 1918–MAY 8, 2008)

Eddy Arnold,was a country music singer who performed for six decades. He
was a innovator of the Nashville sound in the late 1950s, and scored 147
songs on the Billboard country music charts, second only to George Jones. He
sold more than 85 million records. A member of the Grand Ole Opry, beginning
in 1943, and the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1966, Arnold ranked 22nd on  
Country Music Television’s 2003 list of "The 40 Greatest Men of Country Music”.

FIRST AIRLINE STEWARDESS ON THIS DATE IN 1930

As the world’s first airline stewardess, war heroine, and aviation pioneer Ellen
Church (above) created a new and exciting profession for young girls of the
twentieth century. While working as a registered nurse in San Francisco, Ellen
was employed by Boeing Air Transport (BAT), the predecessor to United airlines
in 1930. she soon organized the pioneer group, "Sky Girls" (pictured below).The
eight girls, all registered nurses, were hired as stewardess on their flights for a
three-month trial run. It was the beginning of what other airlines thought at the
time to be a bold experiment.

SONGS FIRST PERFORMANCE ON THIS DATE IN 1887

    John Philip Sousa 

    In his autobiography, Marching Along, John Phillip Sousa (above) wrote that
    he composed the march, "The Stars and Stripes Forever"on Christmas Day
    1896. He had just learned of the recent death of David Blakely, then manager
    of the Sousa Band. Sousa said he was on a ferry in Europe at the time, when
    he composed the march in his head and committed the notes to paper upon
    arrival in America. It was performed for the first time. It was at a ceremony
    where a statue of George Washington was unveiled.

franchise and the adventures of  Indiana  Jones. He is  founder/chairman of
Lucasfilm Ltd. and is one of the industry’s most successful directors/producers.
