FAMOUS KIDNAPPING ON THIS DAY IN 1974
Newspaper heiress Patty Hearst was kidnapped by a urban guerilla group called the
Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA) from her Berkeley, California apartment. She
ultimately joined her captors in furthering their cause and was apprehended after
having taken part in a bank robbery with other members of the group. Hearst, the granddaughter of publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst, was imprisoned
for nearly two years before her sentence was commuted by President Jimmy
Carter and was later granted a presidential pardon by Bill Clinton in his last
official act before leaving office.
After her release from prison, Patty, now known as Patricia Campbell Hearst
Shaw, married her former bodyguard, Bernard Shaw. They have two children
and reside in Garrison, New York. .
