1950’s

Originally called National Cash Register, now NCR Corporation, was
founded in 1884 and acquired by AT&T in 1991. A restructuring of AT&T
in 1996 led to NCR’s re-establishment January 1,1997 as a separate
company and involved the spin-off of Lucent Technologies from AT&T.

Buddy Holly and Maria Elena Santiago (above) were married in a
private ceremony at his parents home in Lubbock, TX.

Japan agreed to surrender unconditionally.

about 200 years.

On this day in 1914, the Panama Canal was officially opened to commercial traffic as an American ship sailed from the Atlantic
to the Pacific Ocean. The first vessel to pass through the canal
was the American cargo and passenger ship SS Ancon.
 

"The Wizard of Oz" premiered in Hollywood, CA. on this day in 1939
and Judy Garland became famous for the movie’s song “Somewhere
Over the Rainbow.” 

The Hollywood premiere of the movie was at Grauman’s Chinese
Theatre (above).
