ROCKWELL ART UP FOR AUCTION
NEW YORK (AP) — A New York City auctioneer says a Norman Rockwell painting
of Boston Red Sox players could bring up to $30 million.
The painting appeared on the cover of the March 2, 1957, issue of the Saturday
Evening Post. The title is: "The Rookie (Red Sox Locker Room)." Christie’s is
offering it today with a pre-sale estimate of $20 million to $30 million.
The painting shows pitcher Frank Sullivan, right fielder Jackie Jensen, catcher
Sammy White, second baseman Billy Goodman and Hall of Famer Ted Williams.
FIRST CARTOON TO WIN A PULITZER PRIZE
The cartoon, "On the Road to Moscow," by Rollin Kirby (above) won a Pulitzer
Prize on this day in 1922. It was the first cartoon awarded the Pulitzer, an honor
that Kirby would receive three times.
ARTIST’S FIRST COVER ON THIS DAY IN 1916
At the age of twenty-two, artist Norman Rockwell’s first cover painting appeared on
”The Saturday Evening Post”. His last painting for the Post was published in 1963, marking the end of a publishing relationship that had included 321 cover paintings.
