the United States about his order to send U.S.forces to blockade Cuba. The blockade was in response to the discovery of Soviet missile bases on the
island.

On this day in 1979, the ousted Shah of Iran, Mohammad Riza
Pahlavi (below), was allowed into the U.S. for medical treatment.

On this day in 2002, bus driver Conrad Johnson was shot at 5:56 a.m. while standing on the steps of his bus at the 14100 block of Grand Pre Road in
Aspen Hill, Maryland. He was the last victim in the D.C. Sniper shootings.

Pablo Casals (Pau Casals i Defilló)
(December 29, 1876 – October 22, 1973)

Pablo Casals was a cellist, composer, and conductor from Catalonia,
Spain. He is generally regarded as the pre-eminent cellist of the first
half of the 20th century, and one of the greatest cellists of all time. He
made many recordings throughout his career and was awarded the
Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy.

The Anthrax scare hits CBS in New York on this day in

CBS News announced that an employee in Dan Rather’s office had tested
positive for skin anthrax.

The FBI and Postal Service announced a $1 million reward for information
leading to the arrest of those responsible for the anthrax mailings.

On this day in 2001, four disciples of Osama bin Laden, convicted in the
1998 bombing of US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, were sentenced
to life in prison and ordered to pay $33 million in restitution to victims.

On this day in 1968, two black athletes, Tommie Smith (center) and John
Carlos, (right) were suspended by the U.S. Olympic Committee for giving
a "black power" salute during a ceremony at the Summer Olympics in
Mexico City.

Charles Edward Anderson Berry (October 18, 1926 – March 18, 2017)

Chuck Berry is one of the pioneers of rock ‘n’ roll who released influential
songs such as "Maybellene" and "Johnny B. Goode."

He became immortalized for songs such as "Roll Over Beethoven," which
reached  #29 on the Billboard Top 100 chart.

Dame Angela Brigid Lansbury was born in London, England.

Golden Globe-winning actress Angela Lansbury played Jessica Fletcher
on the CBS television series  Murder, She Wrote (1984-1996), and also
gained recognition for her role in Mame (1966). She also provided the
voice of the teapot Mrs. Potts in the 1991 animated film Beauty and the
Beast. She was nominated for an Oscar for her role in the 1945 film The
Picture of Dorian Gray.

Over Rogers Dry Lake in Southern California on this day in 1947, pilot Chuck Yeager flew the Bell X-1 rocket plane and became the first person to break
the sound barrier.

Charles Elwood "Chuck" Yeager turned 94 on February 13.

The Battle of Hastings occurred in England on this day in 1066. The Norman forces of William the Conqueror defeated King Harold II of England.

On this day in 1964, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was awarded the
Nobel Peace Prize for his non-violent resistance to racial prejudice
in America. He was the youngest person to receive the award.

Former President Theodore Roosevelt was shot while campaigning
in Milwaukee, WI. on this day in 1912. His wound in the chest was
not serious and he continued with his planned speech. William
Schrenk was captured at the scene of the shooting.

Harry Lillis "Bing" Crosby Jr. (May 3, 1903 – October 14, 1977)

Ralph Dale Earnhardt, Jr. was born in Kannapolis, NC.

NASCAR racer Dale Earnhardt, Jr. won the Busch Series Championship in
1998 and 1999 and the Daytona 500 in 2004 and 2014. He went into his
first race with a car he co-owned with his half brother Kerry. Junior, as he
is called by many, won his 12th consecutive Sprint Cup Series Most Popular
Driver Award in 2014. He is the son of NASCAR Hall of Fame member Dale
Earnhardt Sr.
