The Beirut barracks bombing was a terrorist attack that occurred on 
this day in 1983, in Beirut, Lebanon, during the Lebanese Civil War. It
involved two truck bombs striking buildings housing Multinational
Force in Lebanon (MNF) peacekeepers, specifically against United
States and French service members, killing 241 U.S. and 58 French peacekeepers, 6 civilians and the 2 suicide attackers. A group
called Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the bombings
and said that the attacks were to get the MNF out of Lebanon.

On this day in 1968, two black athletes, Tommie Smith and John
Carlos, were suspended by the U.S. Olympic Committee for giving
a "black power" salute (above) during a ceremony in Mexico City.

The three scientists shared the Nobel Prize on this day in 1962 for
DNA discoveries concerning the molecular structure of nucleic
acids and its significance for information transfer in living material.”

On this day in 1973, OPEC, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting
Countries began an oil-embargo against several countries including
the U.S. and Great Britain. The incident stemmed from Western
support of Israel when Egypt and Syria attacked the nation on
October 6, 1973. The embargo lasted until March of 1974.

An earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter Scale hit the San
Francisco Bay area in California. The quake caused about 67
deaths, 3,000 injuries, and damages up to $7 billion.

Saratoga, New York. It was the turning point in the American Revolutionary War.

Singer Sammy Hagar replaced David Lee Roth as the lead singer
of rock band Van Halen. In 2017, he began touring with The Circle. 

On March 12, 2007, Hagar was inducted into the Rock and Roll
Hall of Fame as a member of Van Halen.
