John Wilkes Booth on this day in 1865. He actually died early the
next morning.

On this day in 1912, the Atlantic passenger liner Titanic, on its
maiden voyage hit an iceberg and began to sink. 1,517 people
lost their lives and more than 700 survived.

the name "American Dictionary of the English Language” on this

albums in a career spanning almost 60 years. She is famous for hits s
uch as "You Ain’t Woman Enough (To Take My Man)", "Don’t Come
Home A’ Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ on Your Mind)", "One’s on the Way",
"Fist City", and "Coal Miner’s Daughter".

prevented the planned moon landing.

Rome. It the Pope’s first visit to a Synagogue on this day in 1986.

Sidney Poitier became the first black to win an Oscar for best actor
on this day in 1964. It was for his role in the film"Lilies of the Field”.

Tiger Woods became the youngest person to win the Masters Tournament at the age of 21 on this day in 1997. He also set a
record when he finished at 18 under par.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt died in Warm Spring, GA. on this
day in 1945. He died of a cerebral hemorrhage at the age of 63. Harry
S. Truman (below) became president.

Soviet Yuri Alexeyevich Gagarin became first man to orbit the Earth
on this day in 1961.

On this day in 1981, the space shuttle Columbia blasted off from
Cape Canaveral, FL, on its first test flight. It orbits Earth 37 times
before landing.

David Letterman retired as host of “The Late Show” on May 20,
2015.

David Michael Letterman is 71 years old today.

David Letterman became a late night TV host during the 1982 debut of
NBC’s Late Night with David Letterman, and later hosted The Late Show 
with David Letterman. In 2014, he announced that he would retire from
The Late Show in 2015. He once worked as a weatherman for AM radio
station WNTS and anchored on Indianapolis television station WLWI.

On this day in 1994, Civil war erupted in Rwanda between the
Patriotic Front rebel group and government soldiers. Hundreds
of thousands were slaughtered in the months that followed.

Billie Holiday (Eleanora Fagan) (April 7, 1915 – July 17, 1959)

Holiday, was a jazz musician and singer-songwriter with a career
spanning nearly thirty years. Nicknamed "Lady Day" by her friend
and music partner Lester Young, she had a huge influence on jazz
music and pop singing.

On this day in 1917, the U.S. Congress approved a declaration of war
on Germany and entered World War I on the Allied side.

Americans Robert Peary and Matthew Henson claimed to be the
first men to reach the North Pole on this day in 1909.

The first modern Olympic Games began in Athens, Greece on this
day in 1896.

Merle Ronald Haggard (April 6, 1937 – April 6, 2016) the country
singer was born in Oildale, California.

Tammy Wynette (Virginia Wynette Pugh) (May 5, 1942 – April 6, 1998)

After years of medical problems which resulted in^[ numerous hospitalizations, roughly 15 major operations and an addiction to pain medication, country
singer Tammy Wynette died on April 6, 1998 at the age of 55 while sleeping
on her couch. Wynette’s doctor from Pennsylvania said she died of a blood
clot in her lung. Despite her persistent illnesses, she continued to perform
until shortly before her death and had other performances scheduled.

Wynette was called the "First Lady of Country Music", and her best-known
song, "Stand by Your Man", is one of the best-selling hit singles by a woman
in the history of country music. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, she
charted 20 number-one songs. Along with Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton,
Tammy is credited with having defined the role of women in country music
during the 1970s.
